Located in the northwest of Australia, Kimberley is a colourful and unique region with a population of only 40,000, about the size of Germany. It may be a bit far, but there is always beautiful scenery in remote places, especially in a country like Australia!
Unique things near Kimberley you should check out
Horizontal Falls
Located in the Kimberley region of northern Western Australia, some refer to it as “one of the greatest natural wonders in the world.” This waterfall is no ordinary one – it is the result of rapidly moving tidal currents – vast amounts of water squeezed through narrow cliff passages, creating a unique horizontal waterfall effect. Visitors can only view and appreciate it from above by taking a scenic flight or up close by taking a cruise!
James Price Point
James Price Point in Western Australia is only a 1.5 hour drive from Broome, making it a local “backyard” for Broome residents. Not only is it surrounded by vibrant red cliffs and turquoise waters, but this area is also home to the world’s largest collection of dinosaur footprints!
Bungle Bungle Range
Located within the Purnululu National Park, the Bungle Bungle Range is comprised of round, red rock formations that appear to be a site for some mysterious ritual and exude a certain mystical power. These sedimentary layers were deposited in a red basin 375 to 350 million years ago while active faults were shaping the landscape.
The Tanami Desert winds and millions of years of rainfall have combined to shape the dome-like structures. As the rocks weathered and eroded over time, along with the effects of water and the temperature fluctuations between day and night, they eventually took on the distinctive appearance we see today.
When visiting this area, make sure to bring your drone to capture the amazing view of the large expanse of red, circular rocks. In a place like Australia which is especially suitable for self-driving trips, using a drone to capture footage while driving makes for a perfect road trip vacation.
Emma Gorge
Emma Gorge is a hidden gem in Western Australia’s Kimberley region. A 65-meter-high almost invisible waterfall cascades down the red cliffs, forming a clear spring oasis. The lush greenery surrounding the cliffs is so breathtaking, it’s hard to believe that such a beautiful sight exists!
Staircase to the Moon
March to October is a good time to visit Broome, a town on the western edge of Kimberley, to see the “Staircase to the Moon.” During this time, the moon rises from the other end of the sea into the night sky. The bright moonlight reflects on the tidal flats of Roebuck Bay like a mirror. When the gentle evening breeze blows over the water, ripples appear and the brightest light becomes a “stairway” to the moon. The dreamlike scenery is so beautiful that it seems unreal, full of romantic imagination.
Cable Beach
Cable Beach is another famous attraction in Broome. Not only does it have the most classic Australian-style sun and beach scenery, but it also has a rare natural wonder of “water on one side and desert on the other.” You can even ride a camel to bid farewell to the gorgeous sunset.
