Hunter Valley Sunflowers

We picked a weekend with perfect weather to go wine tasting in Hunter Valley, and stopped by a sunflower farm we had saved for a long time along the way. We timed it perfectly and watched an absolutely beautiful sunset in the sunflower fields. Even though the sun was setting and most of the sunflowers were facing away from the sun there was still some backlighting in photos, but it didn’t affect the photos too much at all!

Sunflowers have always been my favourite flower, and we just came back from the farm. This sunflower field is actually quite large in scale, and it’s especially beautiful around sunset. We picked 10 flowers to take home, but surprisingly they were pretty heavy. After carrying them for a while, we couldn’t pick any more.

Entry fee is $5 per person, flowers to take home are $3 each, and scissor hire is $5. (You can bring your own scissors — it’s basically impossible to pick them by hand.) Before going, make sure to check their Facebook page for opening hours.

Visiting Hunter Valley Sunflowers

Before visiting, it’s recommended to check the farm’s Facebook page for opening hours so you don’t go for nothing.

Entry fee: $7
$3 per flower
It’s recommended to bring your own scissors
Most of the sunflowers are very thick and sturdy, so it’s hard to pick them by hand.
They also sell scissors at the entrance.
You can pick some flowers that haven’t fully bloomed yet to take home — they can last almost 2 weeks.

Tips

  1. The sunflowers are taller than people, so bringing a selfie stick or tripod will give better photo results.
  2. There are quite a lot of insects, so bring insect repellent spray.
  3. After sunset there are lots of tiny flying insects, so it’s best to leave soon after sunset.
  4. We saw some shed snake skins, so there are snakes on the farm. Don’t walk too deep into the flower fields.
  5. Fresh sunflower stems can be a bit prickly, so be careful when holding them.
  6. Sunflowers brought home should be placed in water as soon as possible, and remember to let them get sunlight.
