Discovering the Umpherston Sinkhole in Mount Gambier

Umpherston Sinkhole in Mount Gambier

The Instagrammable spot in Australia Umpherston Sinkhole, also known as the Cave Garden, is like being in Alice’s Wonderland, and has been voted one of the must-visit places in Australia for travel!

You have probably seen other bloggers or influencers taking photos in the garden from all angles, we had the impression that it should be full of green trees, with a secret garden of blooming flowers hidden deep inside a natural cave covered with ivy, colourful butterflies flying around and a fragrant aroma filling the air, with only bright daylight shining from above!

How Deep is Umpherston Sinkhole

First, the depth and size of the cave: It looked like it was going all the way to the bottom. However, according to information available, it is only about 20m deep with a diameter of about 50 meters and can be walked around in a few minutes. The opening of the cave is also very wide, so you can see the sky and the surface of the earth with a single glance! Friends who are looking for mystery and a sense of otherworldliness might be disappointed, as it is more like an ordinary open-air garden than a hidden paradise, dreamland or Alice’s rabbit hole.

The Cave Garden is well maintained, and the rows of hydrangeas give a dreamy feeling of a wedding. Especially the light pink fluffy flowers hanging on the branches in the photos. However, just like the pink lake in friends’ circle, it could be a seasonal issue. In person, the hydrangeas are still beautiful but not as dense, and the colour is lighter, even a bit green but still it’s a great spot to check out!

Best time to visit Umpherston Sinkhole

During the peak season, there are more people in the garden. If you want to take pictures with no one around, you might want to try to avoid peak tourist season!

A little surprise tip for you. The Cave Garden is still worth visiting and recommended as a must-see attraction for tourists! It is located near the local town, and transportation is very convenient. To enter the garden, you have to walk up a staircase covered with plants, which gives you a refreshing feeling!

The staff responsible for maintaining the Cave Garden deserve praise for their excellent work in plant management. The overwhelming greenery can make you feel completely submerged.

Near the rock wall, there is a divine place for photography (as shown in picture 8). As long as the weather is good and the timing is right, sunlight will shine into the cave.

Address: Jubilee Hwy E, Mount Gambier SA 5290, Australia

Transportation: Travel along National Highway M8 for about 5 hours No admission fee, free parking available!
