Cedar Creek Orchard is about a 1-hour drive from Sydney CBD. It’s a nice place for a weekend, and also very suitable to bring kids to enjoy the process of picking persimmons.
The orchard here is quite big, and most of the persimmons are round, big and sweet, very tasty. The price is also cheaper than supermarkets ($5/kg, although the website says $6/kg), overall very good value.
Every year when persimmon season comes, we bring the kids to the orchard, take a tractor ride into the farm, and enjoy the autumn sun and the fun of picking.
We went during the April school holidays this year, and felt it wasn’t as sweet as when we went in May last year. The fruits were big and crunchy, but sweetness can vary by a couple of weeks, so next year May might be better.
After picking, we drove about 10 minutes to Picton Botanic Gardens playground, and the kids played for more than an hour. It’s probably one of the biggest playgrounds nearby and very busy. There is also the NSW Rail Museum nearby, and sometimes events like the Thirlmere Festival of Steam, worth checking out if you’re interested.
Cedar Creek Orchard: What You Need to Know
- All persimmons you pick must be purchased
- If you plan to buy a lot, you can bring your own bags. The orchard does provide plastic bags, so you don’t have to buy theirs from the website or counter
- Best to wear a hat and long sleeves, there is not much shade
- You can buy tickets online in advance, it’s cheaper than buying on-site
April is persimmon peak season, and the orchard is only open for persimmons picking. Later in winter there should be plums available as well, something to look forward to.
