It’s Easter holiday, we went to Wombeyan Caves, about a 3-hour drive from Sydney. Before going, you need to purchase tickets on the official website and choose the session time you want. We explored two caves ($33) in total, including Wollondilly Cave, which requires a guide to enter, and Fig Tree Cave, which you can explore on your own.
Wollondilly Cave is truly magical, with a 90-minute tour where the guide leads the way and provides explanations. To us, it felt like a hike underground, with lots of climbing up and down, and crawling around!
The pathways inside are mostly narrow ladders and rock crevices, and you often need to stoop or bend your head to get through, making it feel like a real adventure!
It’s best to wear sportswear and comfortable shoes because many of the rocks inside the cave are slippery. If you can, it’s best to drive an off-road vehicle, as the road near the destination is quite rough and bumpy. Low-clearance cars can easily get stuck, and the road is winding and rugged, so drive carefully.
Along the way, you’ll see beautiful poplar trees on both sides of the road! You can stop there and take some photos. If you plan to visit, make sure to book in advance. You can choose a specific cave for $33: a two-cave pass, including the self-guided Fig Tree Cave and the guided Wollondilly Cave tour. or $44 for a 3-cave pass.
Again, the tour includes steep and somewhat long climbing stairs and areas where you’ll need to crouch to get through. It can be a bit chilly inside the cave, so long pants and long sleeves are suggested. Hiking shoes, sports shoes, or boots are best.
Address: Wombeyan Caves. You can reach it by car from Sydney, Canberra, or Wollongong.
