We received a VIP email saying KOI (opened by a MasterChef) has opened in Melbourne. We can’t even remember how many years KOI has been around. We’ve been enjoying it in Sydney for the past seven years. The store has changed locations twice in Sydney, but there’s always a beautiful and delicious new item each visit!
We booked a spot for the soft opening of the KOI dessert bar in Melbourne, and we have to say it was delicious and worth a revisit.
What we think
The delicacy was surprising, and the flavour combinations were excellent and not overly sweet. Almost everything was tasty, but the standout was the signature hazelnut chocolate cake in the middle of the first picture.
The prices are not cheap though, so it’s more of an occasional treat for us.
We love their Baileys, enjoyed the Baileys log with dark chocolate, chocolate jelly, Baileys cream, and a slightly bitter coffee-flavoured base mixed with caramel flakes. It has a rich and slightly bitter aftertaste.
We also love their square cake, with the most layers starts with a berry flavour and transitions down to a chocolate almond base. The first bite is unique, but it doesn’t amaze as you continue eating.
Next time we’ll try the much-talked-about Melbourne-exclusive – Kyosei.
The location is accessible by tram or paid parking in the city. Reservations are currently required, which can be made on OpenTable. The earliest available slot is Sunday at 9 PM, with a one-hour limit.
