The weather has been really cold these days, and we weren’t in the mood for cold brunch salads. This week we discovered a Japanese onigiri shop at the corner of Crown St, the trendy street in Surry Hills. A warm onigiri on a cold day is just perfect!
The shop is called Mogu Mogu. The décor really makes you feel like you are in Tokyo. The music is pleasant without being too loud, everything is just right!
There are many options such as mentaiko, tamago, grilled chicken, and crab. We highly recommend the their freshly grilled onigiri (like wagyu, salmon, and eel). They are warm, fragrant, and delicious. The rich oils, satisfying carbs, and incredibly crispy seaweed make every bite the greatest comfort on a winter morning.
The salmon is like a giant version of salmon sushi. If you prefer a stronger flavour or more wasabi, you can let them know.
The beef onigiri uses M9 wagyu, lightly seared, with beef filling inside the rice ball. It has a rich texture and is priced at $15, but it’s worth trying.
The shop is very meticulous, grilling the seaweed to keep it crispy and using only imported Hokkaido rice.
