Where to find these colourful houses in Sydney Balmain

When we take a ferry from Circular Quay for a day out, we often see the Nordic-style rainbow houses in the photo. After doing some research, we decided to visit for a day trip!

These charming little waterfront houses are near the Birkenhead Point DFO, so if you’re shopping there, it’s worth taking some time to check them out. These colourful houses are actually office spaces now. We happened to catch a stunning sunset when we visited, it reflected beautifully on the water and the colourful houses.

It’s about a 15-minute walk from Balmain Wharf to these colourful houses. The location is the Waterview Wharf Workshop. You’ll need to walk down to reach the spot, and there are quite a few steps!

Search Waterview Wharf Workshops on Google Maps. The address is 37 Nicholson St, Balmain East NSW 2041.

We took the ferry to Balmain Wharf, where you can also capture a full view of the colourful houses from the boat. There’s even a small library at the wharf, which is quite interesting!

You can get there by ferry or by car. If driving, you can stop by Ballast Point Lookout for a full view of the colourful houses. There’s free 2-hour parking on the street. Perfect for a relaxed photo session! Once you arrive at the terrace houses, the space maybe too narrow to get a full shot and you can only use the colourful houses as a backdrop.

Afterward, we took a bus back to Balmain town, where there are plenty of small shops to explore!

If you’re just going for photos, it should take about an hour.
