Popular Matcha Café from Tokyo Opened in Melbourne

The sign has been up on Bourke Street for six months. Today, Nana’s Green Tea finally opened its first Melbourne branch! Stepping into the café feels like entering an authentic Japanese matcha café. There are plenty of seats, and it’s open from 11 am to 11 pm. The menu features matcha drinks, desserts, Japanese-style ochazuke, rice bowls, and salads and so many other choices!

What we tried

Matcha Shiratama Float Latte | $12.5

A delicate matcha latte base topped with a rich matcha ice cream scoop and three shiratama rice dumplings.

The overall taste is slightly bitter, with a strong matcha aroma. The ice cream is intensely matcha flavoured without being sweet. The shiratama dumplings are simple and chewy rice balls—perhaps a bit out of place, but a delight for mochi lovers.

Matcha Cheesecake | $8.9

Slightly overbaked with a noticeable bitter crust, the cake is a bit dry but rich in cheese flavour!

Hojicha Shiratama Float Latte | $12.5

Authentic Japanese roasted tea flavour. The shiratama on top is deliciously chewy, and the ice cream has that classic Japanese sweetness!

Matcha Kuromitsu Frappe | $10.5

Highly recommended! Perfect for cooling down, not overly sweet, and the kuromitsu (black sugar syrup) on top adds a nice touch without being too sugary.

Salmon Soup with Stock | $21.5

The ochazuke (tea-infused rice) is flavourful, but the portion is a bit small. It’s enough for a light meal. In contrast, the salmon donburi comes with a generous serving of fresh salmon. The salmon is fresh, and we absolutely love the roe on top of the rice!

This new café is very popular, so expect to queue for a table. Consider grabbing your order to go. Some items sell out quickly, so arrive early if you have a specific treat in mind, like the Swiss roll.
