Parramatta Lake - Hiking, Kayaking and Picnicking

With the recent rise in temperatures, we once again find ourselves at Parramatta Lake in Sydney. It’s a place we frequently visit, almost like a backyard for our children, given its proximity to our home. Here, a variety of exciting outdoor activities await.

You can bring your own boat for a leisurely cruise on the lake or rent a comfortable rowboat to experience the fresh water and serene surroundings. While we used to bring an inflatable boat for play, the kids now prefer stand-up paddle-boarding. This inflatable board is quick and convenient to inflate and deflate. For water enthusiasts, it serves as an excellent spot for swimming and diving in the designated area along the lake.

Parramatta Lake also provides an ideal picnic spot. The park has free BBQ facilities for grilling, or you can bring your own food or purchase delicious treats from the local cafe and enjoy them on the lakeside grass or in the designated picnic areas.

In addition, there are many hiking trails around Parramatta Lake to explore. Strolling along winding paths allows you to appreciate the rich natural ecology and enchanting scenery surrounding the lake!

Hiking in Lake Parramatta Reserve offers three trails

  1. She-Oak Track is the shortest, with a 1.5 km route along the lake shore, followed by a return path along a route with many beautiful oak trees.
  2. Banksia Trail follows the eastern shore of Parramatta Lake for 2.4 km. The trail provides views of Banksia and other trees native to Eastern Australia.
  3. Lake Circuit, the longest at 4.2 km, offers the chance to see cockatoos, kingfishers, frogs, and lizards. The trail crosses a stream at the northern end of the lake, returning south from the west side.

Kayaking

For one hour, it’s $45 (regular kayaks for two people) or $55/60 (swan kayaks for four people). Kayaking is most enjoyable on cloudy days, and life jackets are mandatory. Babies weighing less than 15 kg are not allowed on the kayaks.

Barbecue and Picnic

There are many free barbecue grills available. Just bring foil and meat; it’s perfect for a weekend picnic with friends or family!

Swimming

A designated area is specifically marked for swimming, and kayaking is also fantastic here!

Playground

There’s a small park nearby with many entertainment facilities for babies, suitable for strolling and playing while having a picnic.
