Sydney Tramway Museum
Next to Loftus Railway Station, there’s the Sydney Tramway Museum, which happens to be the oldest tram museum in Australia. The museum’s collection features a variety of vintage trams from different eras, brimming with historical significance.
The most significant highlight of the museum is the opportunity to take unlimited rides on century-old trams. You can shuttle between Sutherland, the museum itself, and the Royal National Park. During the ride, you’ll even cross a highway, which is sure to excite the kids!
We visited the annual vintage tramway festival, riding a century-old nostalgic tram departing from Central Railway Station and heading south.
Because it was a festival day, there was a special buzz in the air. The event featured various vintage cars and buses on display, attracting train enthusiasts from all over the country, as well as seniors dressed in retro fashion.
The museum houses a diverse collection of vintage trams, most of which you can board to experience and take photos. You can even step into the driver’s compartment – the kids absolutely loved it!
The ticket includes unlimited rides on the vintage tram back and forth to Royal National Park. Riding along the narrow tracks through the jungle was an unforgettable experience.
We’re thinking of coming back on a regular weekend to visit the museum in the morning and then enjoy a leisurely afternoon by the waters of Royal National Park. It would make for a perfect day trip.
