Lyell Deer Sanctuary
Around Brisbane, there’s a super adorable deer haven just like Nara in Japan! Lyell Deer Sanctuary, about 45 minutes from the city, is a picture-perfect deer estate perfect for a weekend day trip. The private farm also houses animals like peacocks, cows, and goats.
One group: $10 entry pass (up to six people). Deer feed: $1/bag.
Meet the deer
There are various deer species; those you can feed outside are brown female deer. There are also two young fallow deer, one with the brown deer, always getting teased but incredibly cute! The farm owner suggests feeding them from outside the iron fence; if you step inside, the deer may compete for food. Any slight movement with a food bag in hand, and the deer will follow you. They’re gentle, making it a popular spot for families with kids.
Outside the deer enclosure, you’ll find other animals like chickens, ducks, and peacocks, all freely roaming. There’s also a majestic white stag nearby, but for safety, you can only observe from outside the iron fence.
Remember not to bring food bags into the enclosure; the deer may nibble them for treats. It’s best to feed them outside the fence or discreetly from your pocket. One clever brown deer follows visitors for treats!
The deer are friendly, allowing you to get close and hug them! The picturesque scenery is great for vibrant outfits, and ample parking is available.
