How should you choose your activewear?

how to choose activewear

For those planning to start exercising for health reasons after the New Year or for beginners interested in trying a specific sport, the right sportswear not only brings joy but also significantly impacts your energy and performance.

When I first started exercising, I used to wear cotton T-shirts. Although they were convenient and readily available, the t-shirt would become wet and clingy after a workout, and it had an unpleasant odour. It definitely affected my mood negatively.

What to look for when choosing activewear?

So, for beginners in sports, consider the following points when choosing sportswear:

  • As a beginner, focus on finding affordable options that fit well. After all, you don’t know how long you can sustain your exercise routine.
  • Opt for moisture-wicking and stretchy materials for activities like Pilates or yoga. For activities like jogging or cycling, choose materials that are breathable, loose, and quick-drying.
  • If you feel that some fitness clothing reveals too much skin, you can layer with a tank top or sleeveless shirt.
  • If you’re concerned about a small tummy, choose high-waisted fitness pants.
  • When it comes to fabric, opt for a blend of nylon, cotton, and spandex or elastane.
  • When buying activewear, make sure to try it on or refer to the size chart. If it’s too tight, it will be uncomfortable, and if it’s too loose, it won’t serve its functional purpose.

Common fabric

  • Nylon (Nylon): The most common fabric for fitness clothing, it is sweat-wicking, quick-drying, and has good elasticity. However, it is not very durable and prone to pilling.
  • Spandex (Lycra): Elastic fibre material with excellent elasticity, breathability, quick drying, and abrasion resistance. It is relatively expensive and is usually paired with other fabrics.
  • Polyester Fibre (Polyester): Lightweight and cool, it is durable and wrinkle-resistant. However, it has poor sweat permeability and is mainly used for making sweat-absorbent clothing. It is often combined with other fabrics.
  • Polypropylene (Polypropylene): A synthetic material that is completely waterproof and does not shrink. However, it does not have quick-drying properties.
