Today more than ever families are feeling more disconnected. Between all the classes and clubs, school and birthday parties, work, and all the other things pulling families in separate directions it is understandable. All the balls being juggled can mean sometimes you wonder how well you know your kids. How do you create time for bonding and do something together? The key is choosing an activity you can all do together. Something like Yoga is great, you can each have your own Yoga towel, grow stronger and healthier together and strengthen the bonds between you.
Beneficial for everyone
Yoga is not just great for adults, it is something anyone can do and benefit from. A one-hour class a week together as a family is something anyone can fit in. You could head to a studio for a formal class, or you could do family yoga time together in a less formal way in the home, or at the park. Maybe even take some sarnies and enjoy a picnic after now and then. It brings you closer together and gets you talking and maybe laughing while you get healthier together.
Benefits to children
What can children learn and benefit from Yoga?
- It is not competitive, there might be some joking about who can bend over and get into some of the harder poses, but it is about your own journey
- Families can connect together as they move and play
- It helps children build up concentration and have more body awareness
- It is excellent for stress management, and even children can feel stress
- It develops flexibility, strength, balance and muscle tone
- Yoga helps with building confidence and a better self-esteem
- Teaches breathing to relax and encourages more oxygen around the body improving a lot of things including circulation
You do not have to take a formal class
You could buy your kids their own yoga towel and set up a spot in the front room or the basement, or the back garden. Set up some videos on your laptop or device to follow and as you all get better and more confident maybe you could start looking at classes or take it to some more fun places. Head to the beach, do some yoga and hit the waves! Yoga and meditation are great to do outdoors in a place where you can appreciate and enjoy nature.
Time together focussed on your own and your families well-being
Yoga enhances family bonds because you are for at least this time all focussed on each other as well as your own journey. Nothing interrupts your time together, you learn to help each other, it opens communication between you. Just an hour a week and a yoga towel and you can enjoy better sleep, better connection, better health, fewer blow-ups, better control over emotions and less family stress. It is amazing what this can do for families who make the effort to set aside this time for each other each week.
