Field of Light – The Spectacular Light Show at Uluru National Park

light show uluru

In the wilderness of Uluru, someone has created a visual fairy tale on Earth with 50,000 light installations! As night falls, the desert comes alive with twinkling stars, and the celestial stars above complement the lights below. The desert comes to life in the darkness, creating an incredibly romantic atmosphere!

You don’t need to doubt your eyes; this is an art installation created by artist Bruce Munro in Australia. In 1992, while travelling to Uluru with his then-fiancée Serena, Bruce Munro witnessed the moment when desert flowers bloomed after rain in the desert. This inspired him to conceive the “Field of Light” installation.

This is a must-visit activity when you go to Uluru! To blend with the vast red desert, Bruce Munro spent thousands of hours with his team installing 50,000 illuminated light stems. He simulated raindrops and plant shapes, aiming to infuse the light with the soul and life of nature.

Our experience

We initially didn’t think much about attending this Outback stargazing event, thinking it was just a light show – nothing special. However, my friends strongly recommended it, so We signed up for the sunrise session, which was a bit more expensive than the sunset one. They provided a simple breakfast for $75 (we recommend joining the English-speaking group as there are no extra fees, and you can pay online. Plus, you don’t need to know English for this tour; it’s all about stargazing, sunrise, and photography).

From the moment it got dark until the sunrise, it was truly stunning! Having some cookies and coffee during the sunrise while sitting there and enjoying the natural scenery… that feeling was incredible!

After the sunrise, there were a lot of flies, so remember to bring a fly net; otherwise, you’ll be bothered by flies the whole time.

The meeting time for this tour is at 4:15, so if you want to take photos, you’ll need to get up around 3 AM to get ready.

But the effort is worth it! Be sure to check the weather forecast before booking.
