Australia Seasons – What’s the Best Time to Visit Australia

season in australia

Seasons of Australia

The seasons in Australia are quite different from those in many other countries. Although the time difference is only 2-3 hours, the seasons are completely opposite.

Summer: December – February;

Autumn: March – May;

Winter: June – August;

Spring: September – November.

The northern part of Australia has a tropical climate, entering the rainy season from April to November, and the rest of the time is the dry season. January to February is the typhoon season. The southern part of Australia has a temperate climate with distinct four seasons. The inland of Australia is a desert, which is dry but also a tourist destination.

Although Australia also has four seasons, sometimes extreme weather can be encountered, giving us the experience of experiencing four seasons in a day, such as in Melbourne.

In the summer, it can be sunny in the morning with temperatures continuing to rise to 40°C. At noon, there may be thunder and lightning, and the temperature can drop quickly to around 27°C. The winter temperature is generally between 6 and 14°C, and remote areas may have snow. The spring and autumn temperatures are generally between 10 and 20°C.

Seasons in different State

The characteristic of Melbourne in spring is strong winds, and there may be a big temperature drop. From May to October, it enters the rainy season. In addition to heavy rain, there may also be severe weather such as heavy rain and storms.

Sydney’s weather changes relatively less. The climate here is pleasant with plenty of sunshine. The summer temperature is between 18 and 25°C. There are more than 340 sunny days throughout the year, and there is not much rain, but the humidity is high, and there may be gales and storms.

Brisbane has a subtropical climate, with higher temperatures in the summer, reaching above 30°C, and drier in the winter, with temperatures around 17°C.

Adelaide has a mild and humid winter, with temperatures around 15°C, and it is the driest area in Australia in the summer, with temperatures up to 29°C.

Best time (and places) to visit Australia

Best places to visit in Australia in Spring

Spring in Australia begins with the blossoming of jacaranda trees. The most beautiful jacarandas in Australia are found in the town of Grafton, located about 7-hour drive north of Sydney in New South Wales. Every year from late October to early November, Grafton holds the Jacaranda Festival to celebrate the arrival of spring in Australia. Walking under the jacaranda trees feels like stepping into a purple fairytale world.

Best places to visit in Australia in Summer

What does summer in Australia smell like? Is it the beach or the waves? None of the above. Summer in Australia is perhaps the scent of lavender fields. Located about an hour’s drive north of the small town of Launceston in Tasmania is the largest lavender farm in the Southern Hemisphere. The 260-acre farm is covered with purple lavender flowers in December, forming a beautiful sea of purple. The farm’s specialty is lavender ice cream, which has a refreshing taste with a hint of lavender scent. And don’t forget the popular lavender teddy bears that make great souvenirs for visitors!

Best places to visit in Australia in Autumn

Our favourite place to experience autumn in Australia is Hahndorf, a German village located about 30 minutes drive from the city centre of Adelaide in South Australia. While autumn may be associated with melancholy, I prefer to think of it as a gift to the senses. Hahndorf’s autumn is a gift to the eyes and to those who love beauty. It’s like someone accidentally spilled a paint palette in autumn and it all landed in Hahndorf. So, in autumn, you deserve to experience the colourful beauty of autumn in Hahndorf.

Best places to visit in Australia in Winter

Do you want to be the first lucky person in all of Australia to welcome the sun in the morning? Then come to Byron Bay in northern New South Wales! The first ray of sunshine in Australia always lands on this easternmost bay every day. During winter, which starts around June, you can also see whales jumping out of the water in Byron Bay. Many humpback whales migrate from the cold southern waters to the warm northern waters during winter and they play and wait for their companions in Byron Bay. It’s said that those who have bathed in the first ray of sunshine in Australia and have seen whales will have good luck!

Plan your travel wisely

Overall, extreme weather can occur in various regions of Australia, so precautions should be taken in terms of clothing.

  1. In tropical areas, thin clothing can be worn throughout the year, but the temperature difference between morning and evening is large, so it is necessary to carry a coat with you to keep warm in the morning and evening and to protect against the sun during the day.
  2. Warm clothing such as sweaters and jackets are necessary in winter (June-August).

The hottest time in Australia can reach above 45°C, and the average temperature per year also increases, so sunscreen and heatstroke prevention are very important.

It is recommended that everyone download the BOM Weather APP, a free official software released by the Bureau of Meteorology, which can query real-time weather changes and help everyone prepare in advance.
