Puffing Billy Railway – Train Ride
One thing you must not miss when in Melbourne is the Puffing Billy Steam Train. This steam railway, which started running in 1900 and is still operational today, is one of the world’s most famous steam heritage railways! It’s now one of Melbourne’s must-visit Instagram-worthy spots.
Ticket Booking Tips
Make sure to book a month or at least two weeks in advance because there are only a few train rides available each day, and tickets are usually scarce for last-minute bookings. We recommend choosing the Belgrave to Lakeside round trip (only this route allows you to dangle your legs outside and offers beautiful scenery – that’s why it’s so popular). The price is $62 for adults, $31 for children (4-14 years old), and $155 for 2 adults and 2 children.
It’s highly recommended that you arrive at the station 30-40 minutes early to collect your tickets because the train really does not wait, it departs on time.
Seating Recommendations
We suggest sitting on the right side of the train in the direction of travel. It’s better for taking photos during turns and offers more scenic views. We also recommend sitting towards the rear of the train, away from the front to avoid getting soot from the engine on you.
Similarly, on the return trip, try to sit towards the rear on the left side in the direction of travel. After sitting by the window for a while, you can return to the carriage, as sitting on the window ledge for an extended period can make your legs sore.
Make sure to bring a warm jacket; it can get quite windy on the train.
Duration
The one-way journey from Belgrave to Lakeside station takes about 1 hour. The train usually stops at Lakeside for about 1-2 hours, where you can rent paddle boats, enjoy a wading pool, visit a cafe, and use barbecue facilities in the park near the station. It’s a great family-friendly route.
Afterwards, you can explore a bit and then return.
If you plan to visit Phillip Island later in the day, it’s advisable not to take the return trip and head straight to the next attraction since the chocolate factory closes at 4:30 PM!
Things to do during the ride
Take photos of the vintage-style station signs. Capture scenes from the train during the journey. Panoramic shots as the train goes around bends. Take photos with the train as a background after it stops.
